NEXT POST MEETING: TUESDAY, August 10, 2010

PLACE: THE SIZZLER, 1401 N. HARBOR BLVD.

TIME:  DINNER 6:00 PM, MEETING 7:00 PM

PROGRAM: Sponsoring a Cub Scout Pack

Our 1st VC Richard Wakefield has taken a vey active role in the Cub Scouts.  They have helped us at the last Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies.  He and Eric Bauserman, Pack 1218 Cub Master, will share what the Pack has done the past year and what the Cub Scout program is all about.  The Post is considering sponsoring the Pack and wants your input.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game: Don Dutton, our special events coordinator, has coordinated “Legion Night Out” games to see the Orange County Flyers (formerly the Fullerton Flyers).  Our group ticket rate is $5 per ticket.  The next night is in August on Friday, August 20 at 6:05pm.  Parking is now FREE! Contact Don for tickets at (714) 993-5625.

Chaplain’s Message to the Members:  “If my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, And see my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14, KJV)  If we can be of service to you, please give us a call.  Jim Howland and Hal Dixon

Commander’s Corner:  We had a great time at the Orange County Flyer baseball game.  Thanks Don Dutton for planning the event for us.  Hope you can join us for the second game in August.  The new American Legion 29th District commander is Clay Baxter.  We should have a great year with Clay.  The National Convention will be in August.  Our Girls and Boys State students have come home.  Be sure to put the September meeting on your calendar so that you can meet all the kids we sponsored for special programs this year.

Two Changes for Veterans: The VA has relaxed some of the requirements for qualifying for compensation for PTS/PTSD.  To qualify, you will no longer have had to be in actual combat.  Please check with the VA if this change might help you.  Second, if your veteran is buried without a VA provided headstone, you may apply for a bronze medallion for placement next to the headstone.  You cannot have both the headstone and the medallion, you must choose one or the other.  Check with the VA for the procedures involved with this change.

The 2011 membership year began 1 July.  If you have not paid your 2010 dues, send it in ASAP.  If you pay for 2011 without paying for 2010, your Continuous Years will start at one (1) year again. If you have paid your 2011 dues, you should receive your card prior to the meeting as we will send in the first set to Department the last week of July.

Upcoming Events:  The Post meetings are always on the second Tuesday of the month.  The officer meeting is the Wednesday prior to the meeting.  The next few monthly meetings are:  September 14, October 12, and November 9.  Please mark your calendars.

Notes from July Meeting.  The meeting was called to order by Commander Marilyn Harris at 7:00 p.m.  1st Vice Commander George Miller then introduced the featured speaker for the night, Fullerton City Manager Chris Meyer.  Chris will be retiring in December after 37 years with the City.  He discussed many things; the upcoming election and who has taken out papers already, the denial of development in West Coyote Hills, Amerige Court, moving the McDonalds at Pomona and Chapman, the Fox Theater, Hillcrest Park, the Redevelopment areas that bring in $18 million annually and will end in 2018, the 350 units of student housing at Chapman and Commonwealth, the 800 space Parking Structure that will be built when World Citrus is torn down, the potential for High Speed rail and the State and City Budgets.  The City reduced 89 positions from two years ago and eliminated 26 people as of July 3, 2010.  The City’s budget is down $14 million from two years ago.  The water system funding model is broke as with conservation there is less money to maintain the system.  The city has many street lights dating from the 1920’s and there is no money to repair them.  The City is building a new multi-generational community center where the Senior Center and Boys/Girls Club are located.  The belief is that seniors use the center until about 2-3 pm when the young people can come in until 6 or 7 and then seniors return.

After a short recess, Commander Harris recognized the Post’s five nonagenarians in attendance; Buck Catlin, Haskell Ford, Kendall Neisess, Lloyd Plowman and Joe Spencer.  She then presented certificates and medals for the prior year’s activities to Rich Wakefield, George Miller, Mike Albertson, Ed Paul, Larry Sears, Don Dutton, Jim Howland, Hal Dixon, Alan Wiles, Andrew Wiles, Mike Box, Mike Hyland, Pat Hyland, Kendall Neisess, Warren Holmes, Neil Reich, Bruce Anderson, Richard Dinsmore. Myron Roberts, Jeff Harris and Marilyn Harris.  She also presented certificates of appreciation to Sandy Anderson, Katie Harris, LaVerne Holmes and Pansy Paul.

Commander Harris then presented the Legionnaire of the Year award to Jeff Harris.  Jeff was acknowledged for his leading role in many of the Post’s community activities; Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Selection of Boys and Girls State candidates and any activity that requires Post volunteers.  Jeff thanked the Post for the honor and was thrilled to received his recognition with a case to hold his Challenge Coins.

Commander Harris reported 3rd VC Mike Albertson spent a day in Sacramento as the guest of Assemblyman Chris Norby which was to honor veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.  She also reported that it is now possible to get a military medallion to put on a civilian grave marker.  She also introduced new 29th District Commander Clay Baxter.

Special Events Officer Don Dutton reminded everyone about the OC Flyers Family night on Saturday, 17 July, the Flyers will host a double headers starting at 5:05 PM and their next home game will be on Friday, 20 August at 6:05 PM.  AND NOW THE PARKING IS FREE. More information is available at the OC Flyers website: www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com or call 714-526-8326.  In closing, Commander Marilyn Harris thanked all present for another great year and the many contributions of all to having such an active Post.  She also announced that BG Keith Jones of the California Army National Guard has confirmed as the Veteran’s Day Speaker.
