NEXT POST MEETING: TUESDAY February 9, 2010

PLACE: THE SIZZLER, 1401 N. HARBOR BLVD.

TIME:  DINNER 6:00 PM, MEETING 7:00 PM

PROGRAM: Four Chaplains and Valentines Day

Our February program will feature a tribute to the Four Chaplains, an inspiring story of four men of different faiths who gave their lives so four other servicemen might have a chance to live.  This will be followed by our traditional Valentine’s Day program featuring a barbershop quartet singing old favorites.  This is an excellent meeting to bring your spouse or significant other.   Special treats to be served.

Important Reminder.  Members who have already purchased tickets for the membership appreciation event in February, your tickets will be available at the February Post meeting.  If you can't make that meeting, you can pick-up your tickets at 5:45 at the event site. Questions? Call Don Dutton @ 714-993-5625.

Commander’s Club. We are still seeking at least one additional member.  December is the last month for a 2009 tax deduction. If you, or someone you know is interested, contact Ed Paul at (714) 992-1816.  The Commander’s Club support allows us to provide the Veterans Day Parade, Boys and Girls State, School Scholarships and helps with Memorial Day.

Chaplain’s Message to the Members:  “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” (Isaiah 26:3-4, NAS translation)  If I can be of service to you, please give me a call.  Jim Howland (Hal Dixon is wintering in Texas)

Chaplain’s Message to the Members:  “Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life.  Words satisfy the soul as food satisfies the stomach; the right words on a person’s lips bring satisfaction.” (Proverbs 18:20-21, NLT translation)  If I can be of service to you, please give me a call.  Jim Howland

Commander’s Corner:  I hope you are beginning to dry out from the recent rainy week.  We got more than 10 inches at our house.  What a week!  At January’s meeting, we passed out continuous membership certificates to those who were able to attend.  We had a great crowd and the Fullerton Paramedics did a great job sharing with us and answering our questions.  Those of us involved with Boys and Girls State, and the Youth Environmental Conference, will begin our interview process shortly.  Take good care of yourselves and each other.  I hope you’ll put the meeting on your calendar and come have some fun dining and enjoying the good company.

Membership drive for 2010 is ongoing.  There are huge delays at the Department and National levels.  Please do not pay a second time if you have a 2010 card in your hand.   Call one of us to check if you are concerned.

Upcoming Events:  The Post meetings are always on the second Tuesday of the month.  The officer meeting is the Wednesday prior to the meeting.  The next few monthly meetings are:  March 9, April 13 and May 11.  Please mark your calendars.

Continuous Membership Certificates:  Certificates were sent by mail.  If you did not receive your certificate please call me.  A few are on hold for membership status.  Congratulations again to Melvin A. Woodward for his 65 years of service in the American Legion.  A press release of the ceremony is in the works.  Watch for it in the paper.

Notes from January Meeting. 1st Vice Commander George Miller introduced Operations Chief Gary Dominguez of the Fullerton Fire Department.  Chief Dominguez then introduced paramedics that work out of Fire Station #4 in Fullerton.  The paramedics briefed the assembled Legionnaires, family and friends, on many life saving procedures, and they demonstrated how they employ special gear and equipment in emergency situations.  The paramedics also briefed the benefits of the “Paramedic Subscription Program.”  Since July 1983, the City of Fullerton has charged a per call fee for paramedic services. This fee applies to residents and nonresidents alike, and the amount of the fee depends on the type of service rendered. An ALS (Advance Life Support) charge is currently $500 and a BLS (Basic Life Support) charge is $250.  As a Fullerton resident or Business Owner/Manager, you have an alternative to these per call fees. You can take advantage of a special Paramedic Subscription Program that provides paramedic coverage at a very moderate annual cost. The subscription cost for one year (July 1 through June 30) is as follows: Residence $42, covers all members of the household, Businesses, $42 for every 10 employees or portion thereof.

After a short break, Commander Marilyn Harris issued out five year, ten year, fifteen year, twenty year, and twenty-five year service certificates to many deserving legionnaires.   Present and receiving their certificates were 1st Vice Commander Richard Wakefield-10 years; Carl Green, Walt Little, John Riegel-15 years, Past Commander Walt Witt-20 years.  But the highlight of the night was when Past Commander Mel Woodward was awarded his 65 Year service certificate.  Mel explained to the group how the American Legion has positively impacted his life, starting as a young man growing up in Missouri, and later as a resident of California.  He also coached Legion baseball for 29 years and had two catchers; Del Crandall and Gary Carter, make it to the majors.  Carter is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Mel and his wife both received a standing ovation from all that attended the meeting.
