PLACE: THE SIZZLER, 1401 N. HARBOR BLVD.
At our June meeting, it was decided unanimously
to not have a July meeting.
Two other events are happening
the same night that may drastically affect our attendance.
The City of Fullerton is holding a final hearing on the
Coyote Hills Development and the
Baseball All Star game is being
played. Next meeting will be August
9, 2011.
Memorial Day Support.
We had a great Memorial Day program.
Thanks to all the Legionnaires and family members who helped.
Over 700 people helped at some point.
Legionnaires were active in building cross holders, painting and
repairing crosses, cross prepositioning on Friday, placing flags and crosses on
Saturday, helping at the ceremony on Monday, pick-up on Tuesday and flag ironing
on Wednesday. To those who helped,
a big thank you.

Chaplain’s Message to the Members:
“How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!
How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose
Spirit there is no deceit.” (Psalm 32:1-2 NAS translation)
If we can be of service to you, please give me a call.

Commander’s Corner:
Remember, NO MEETING IN JULY.
Walter Witt conducted the
installation of the Post officers at the June meeting.
Thanks Walt!
Thank you again to the Post officers for volunteering for another year.
The Boys State participants are back from Sacramento and the girls are at
Girls State at McKenna College, Claremont.
The American Legion State Convention in Ontario ended Sunday.
There will be a $2 increase in per capita at the Department level.
We will discuss how this affects the Post soon.
I have picked up the new cards and we will be ready to go on membership
when the renewals start coming in.
Renewal notices (sent out by higher headquarters) will start arriving at your
house beginning in early July.
Please consider renewing early as it prevents further notices and reduces
confusion.
A huge "Thank You" to our wonderful Post member Mr.
James McEachin for his generosity for providing group tickets for some of us
to attend his one-man play at the Mark Taper Forum on Memorial Day. The play was
very moving and beautifully done. We all enjoyed it tremendously. The whole
experience was incredible!
New Renewal Option:
This year you may pay online to National if you wish to.
The Legion has been conducting a trial run with a few states around the
US. After payment, national will
take out their per capita, then send the rest of the money to Department, where
they will have to separate out the per capita and return to the posts what money
is theirs. That will be difficult,
but not impossible, since the posts have different dues.
It turns around the sequence with money, i.e. the post will be the last
to have the money, and the member
won’t get a card until their renewal is verified by national level.
OR
you can do your dues directly to the Post as you always have, get
your card from us then, and the delay will be transparent to you except that you
may get a second notice even though you have paid your dues and are current in
every way.

Problems at District Level:
There is a challenge to the election results.
The District leadership (Commander, Staff, and Post Commanders) is
hashing this out right now. Really
ugly, but it must be done.
DD 214/Discharge Papers:
Do you know where your discharge papers are?
Does your family know where they are?
We often hear from families that they don’t know where they are.
Without this important document your burial benefits will be delayed
several weeks unnecessarily. If you
plan to be buried in a national cemetery, it won’t happen, until proof is given
to the cemetery. Please give a copy
to someone or let your next of kin know where to find them.
The 2012 year will
begin 1 July. If you have not paid
your 2011 dues, you need to send it in ASAP and clearly mark it as 2011 dues.
If you pay for 2012 without paying for 2011, your Continuous Years will
start at one (1) year again.

Notes from June Meeting.
Commander Marilyn Harris called the
meeting to order at 7:00 pm, and she welcomed all guests. Guest speaker was John
Schram of Hospice Care of California. John is a Vietnam vet and has been with
the program 19 years. He recently
established a Vet to Vet Volunteer program where he matches a vet with a vet in
hospice and it has had very positive results.
Hospice is to help with Quality of Life when Quantity of Life is compromised.
It is not a curative program. It is funded 100% through Medicare and most
commercial insurance. It keeps the
patient in a home setting rather than a hospital setting which is both
cost-effective and more comforting.
Each person is assigned 5 people:
1.
Case Manager Nurse
who supplements and provides in home care a minimum 2x per week, more if needed.
2.
Home Health Aid-2x
per week.
3.
Social
Worker-provides non-medical services; An Advanced Directive, can be accomplished
with 2 witnesses and does not need an attorney or notary.
Works within the family dynamics to resolve concerns.
4.
Non-denominational
Chaplain.
5.
Volunteer –Do
whatever they can to provide assistance-play cards, shop, sit and talk.
This is where the Vet to Vet program comes in.
They have partnered with the VA.
Expectation of time is one hour per week. You choose the person, area and
time.
Everything is focused on Life. Can’t
change the outcome, just make the journey better.
Premise is to normalize as best you can.
Doctor make determination is “Appropriate” for Hospice.
Belief is that it will last 6 months, however that is very subjective.
May be much longer. Must
recertify every 90 days, then every 60 after that.
24
hour telephone access, four doctors are on call
Also
offer “respite Care”. Can be
relocated for up to 5 days. If
continuous care is needed a staff person will be in the home 24-7.
This usually lasts 1-2 days.
Area
covered by his group is Orange County and LA County to the Long Beach Freeway.
Past
Commander Walt Witt installed the
officers for 2011-2012. For a complete list, see the list on the left of the
July newsletter.
Commander Harris reported on a special Memorial Day play by our member Jim McEachin’s one man play, Above the Call-Beyond the Duty at the Mark Taper Forum. Not only did we see Jim but we also got to meet Sidney Poitier.
A motion was made, seconded and approved unanimously to not hold an officer or general meeting for July. There are two events on the evening of July 12 that will take away attendance. One is the Baseball All Star game. The second is the Fullerton City Council meeting on the Coyote Hill Development plan.
