ADDRESS SERVICE

September 2010 NEWSLETTER

NEXT POST MEETING: TUESDAY, September 14, 2010

PLACE: THE SIZZLER, 1401 N. HARBOR BLVD.

TIME:  DINNER 6:00 PM, MEETING 7:00 PM

PROGRAM: POW/MIA Recognition & Boys/Girls State, YEC Students

Our September program will begin with our annual tribute to POW/MIA’s followed by our Boys and Girls State and YEC participants. The POW/MIA ceremony is a brief but very moving ceremony that reminds us of our comrades and their families who still suffer from the loss and uncertainty of their loved ones.

Chaplain’s Message to the Members:  “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord.  Nor faint when you are reproved by Him.  For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines.  And He scourges every son whom He receives.” (Hebrews 12:5b-6 NAS translation)  If we can be of service to you, please give us a call.  Jim Howland & Hal Dixon.

This month we transferred David B. Ashley, William F. Seymour, and William K. West to Post Everlasting.  We also lost one our regular attendees, Pixy Maurin, Bucky’s wife.  We will miss her!

Commander’s Corner:  For our meeting, we will be hosting our special events kids (YEC, Boys and Girls State).  I hope that you will come to meet them.  They are very special students.  You will get a kick out of hearing about their experiences.  Our “Staters” will have a great entry for their resume and college applications.  Additionally, our YEC students will be eligible for a scholarship during their college time.

Another important issue will be decided on at our meeting.  At our last meeting, we had a Cub Scout troop brief us about their unit.  At our meeting we voted to have the Executive Committee evaluate whether we should or can be their Charter Organization.  The troop is losing its Charter Organization and is hoping that we can do that for them.  (They must have a community charter organization to operate.)  If we consider that, we need to add at least one Commander’s Club member.  The Commander’s Club supports our annual budget with their donations, covering most of our programs.  So if scouting is a passion of yours or you know someone (no need to be a member) who would be excited at the prospect of our Post doing this, please call Ed Paul.  He coordinates the Commander’s Club.  Please consider this with us.

By the time you get this school will have started.  We had a great time at the OC Flyer game on August 20th.  Thanks Don Dutton for planning that for our members.  Planning for Veterans Day is on tract.  We have our guest speaker set.  The first set of membership cards have been sent out.  We do not send out the renewals so I don’t know what schedule they will follow this year.  Remember to pay by mid-November in order to keep your magazine subscription uninterrupted.  If you get another notice and you already have a 2011 card, do not pay again.  The system will eventually catch up with itself.

Two Changes for Veterans: The VA has relaxed some of the requirements for qualifying for compensation for PTS/PTSD.  To qualify, you will no longer have had to be in actual combat.  Please check with the VA if this change might help you.  Second, if your veteran is buried without a VA provided headstone, you may apply for a bronze medallion for placement next to the headstone.  You cannot have both the headstone and the medallion; you must choose one or the other.  Check with the VA for the procedures involved with this change.

The 2011 membership year began 1 July.  If you pay for 2011 without paying for 2010, your Continuous Years will start at one (1) year again.  You can make this up by paying the other year.  It will take some coordination with Richard Wakefield and Larry Sears.

Upcoming Events:  The Post meetings are always on the second Tuesday of the month.  The officer meeting is the Wednesday prior to the meeting.  The next few monthly meetings are:  October 12, November 9 and December 14.  Please mark your calendars.

Notes from the August Meeting.  The meeting was called to order by Commander Marilyn Harris at 7:00 p.m.  1st Vice Commander Richard Wakefield and Eric Bauserman presented a program on the Boys and Cub Scouts, the values they teach young boys and how the Post can become a sponsor.  Pack 1218 needs a new sponsor or Charter Organization and they hope the Post will consider being the sponsor.  To exist, each Scout unit needs a local community charter organization.  Scouting is a long-standing American Legion supported program that dates back to 1919.  After the presentation, a motion was made, seconded and approved unanimously to have the Executive Board discuss and bring back a motion, including an annual donation amount, to the September meeting.

Commander Harris presented Certificates and Medals to members Mike Box, Walt Witt and Al Blake for their support of Post activities during the year.  She also thanked Finance Officer Larry Sears for his outstanding financial reporting which is far above any others she has reviewed.  Chaplain Howland reported the recent passing of Pixie Maurin.  Bucky and Pixie had been regular attendees for many years until her illness last winter.   A memorial service will be scheduled.

Service Office Mike Hyland reported on the threats to access to Tri-Care.  He suggested writing or calling all members of Congress to get their support.  Don Dutton reported on the last Flyers game for us will be on 8/20/10. Commander Harris reported she has been selected to serve as Supervisor Shawn Nelson’s representative to the Veterans Advisory Committee.  It involves one meeting a month.
